This essay examines how the ancient concept of the Greek ekklesía shaped early Christian communities and can serve as an inspiration for democratic participation today. The author introduces Athenian democracy and the Roman Republic, and then explores the meaning of the term ekklesía in the New Testament. He argues that Paul’s conception of the ekklesía promoted participation, equality and servant leadership, whilst at the same time limiting the dominance of the elite. Thus, New Testament approaches can inspire the democratic organisation of the Church, diaconal institutions and society as a whole.
