Abstract

This article argues for a religion-sensitive approach in contemporary social work. While religion and spirituality were largely excluded from social work theory during professionalization processes after the 1970s, the author contends that existential, spiritual, and religious dimensions remain important in clients’ lives. Drawing on sociological theories of resonance and self-transcendence, the paper proposes a broader understanding of religiosity beyond institutional faith. Religion is discussed as both a potential resource and risk factor in coping, identity formation, and social participation.
