Abstract

The story of the healing of Peter’s mother-in-law in Mark 1:29–31 is brief and often overlooked, yet right at the beginning of the Gospel it offers a key—from christological, soteriological, and ecclesiological perspectives—to understanding the narrative that is just unfolding. Through her wordless service to Jesus and the disciples, the mother-in-law demonstrates that she understood Jesus’ healing as a service to her, one that enables her to serve him and his followers. Thus, the central motif of Mark’s theology of the cross (Kreuzestheologie) is unfolded narratively right at the beginning of the Gospel. In a nutshell: The cooking spoon of the healed woman becomes the
hermeneutical key to the Gospel.
